Being bored and everything (I've said this before haven't I?), I decided to go on the Yorkshire wheel. It's a ferris wheel like the London Eye.

The view, however, was nothing as exciting.
I got a good view of the York Railway Station which was the largest in the world at the time when it was built.

Here is a nice boring scenic view of the city and the minster.

It's boring for you, looking at it on your computer screen, but for me, seeing it out the window of a little box on a wheel high up in the sky was quite fun.

Being bored and everything, I went shopping online for junk. But look what I found! This is my new set of three speakers in tripod form. My blue bear likes it very much. It's loud and interesting. I will stick it out of my window at maximum volume to "entertain" my neighbours.

It's twice this week that I've been caught in a rainstorm. And that's not including the one time I was caught in the pissing rain that just went on and on and on. The weather here is completely shitty. I was told that I deserved it. Apparently, anyone who comes to Northern England deserves this. Bleah!

Just yesterday, I cycled to Tesco supermarket that was an hour away. When I emerged from Tesco, my unbelieving eyes were treated to the sight of a Yorkshire rainstorm comparable to the quality of a tropical one. I waited 10 mins for it to stop. It sort of eased up a little but didn't stop. So I thought, "what the hell, I'm a tough guy" buttoned up my jacket and put on my hat and macho-ly cycled out into the diagonal rain. It was horrible. My poor glasses had sheets of water splashing down them and I wished I had installed windscreen wipers on them. And all the way I sang to myself, "I'm a tough guy, a tough guy. A macho macho tough guy" While secretly thinking, "MUMMYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! I WANT MY MUMMYYYYYYYY!!!!" Man! I couldn't help thinking that if my mummy had been there, she would have called a taxi straight away. Or better yet, called my father to come pick us up in the private "taxi".

And all the drivel about rain is due to the fact that, as usual, there is nothing more interesting than the weather to talk about.

This blog has been quite neglected. But what have I got to write about when life is so quiet? My mummy has been pestering me to go get a driving licence. Actually, I don't really want to. It's boring and tiring. And with me, I will most probably drive recklessly just to make it interesting. Well, maybe I will get around to it when I am bored enough. Dying of having nothing to do. Help me.

Yesterday, I woke up as usual, brushed my teeth and looked in the mirror.

WHAT THE...!!! There was this brunette waving at me. What did she do to the blond one???

Nah... only kidding. Actually, I got bored and decided to stop being a dumb blond. Jun said, "NO WAY!!!"

XY is disillusioned about love and relationships. After 2 break-ups within about a month or so of each other, she has come to the conclusion the love doesn't last.

I disagree. Actually, many people find true and lasting love the moment they are born. After so many years, your mummy still loves you right?

But anyway, here are a few mottos I came up with during an online chat with Rhoda. You may want to adopt one of them:

Love "n" Shove

Kiss "n" Dismiss

Grope "n" Mope

Use "n" Refuse

And my personal favourite:

Fuck "n" Chuck

On second thought, it might reflect badly on my social conscience to promote Short Passionate Flings over Long-term Commitments. But you know, freedom of choice still rules!

Hmmm... I was going to be lazy and not update the photos from Greece, but XY made me promise to do it, so I will.

When we first arrived at Athens International Airport, we made for the train station to take us to Kiato which was the seaside town near our site. The night before, we hadn't slept at all and for me, I went on a field trip in the morning. So imagine, after 30+ hours of no sleep and little food, you land in a new country and all of a sudden find yourself staring at a sign like this:

Strange thoughts begin to go through your mind.
And on the train, we were mostly like this:

Except for me, who was running around annoying people by photographing their sleepy faces.

When we arrived at Kiato, we were told that the school in Vasilico (small village up on the plateau where the site is located) was not yet ready for us to move in. So we had to wait it out at the beachside restaurant. By that time, we were too tire to be more tired and so became hyper instead.

The beach was very nice. And after we had rested well, we could enjoy it properly. Here is Jess, being swamped by a Greek wave.

The Sikyon Survey Project is a very international one. This season, we had people like me from York, some Irish, some Canadians and Americans and some Greeks. From York, there was me, the Singaporean, Pedro, the Portuguese brought up in Aussieland, Marieke the Belgian and Michael the American who were not English.

When the Greeks arrived, we were taken on a tour of the part of Ancient Sikyon that had already been excavated.

Here, you can see the ancient theatre. We field walked the plateau just above this place during the first 2 weeks or so. Once, I threw an orange from the plateau edge and it bounced all the way downhill to land here.

At the Apothiki (storage place) we were given a talk on different types of pottery. This place was across the road from the school and we usual spent 3 hours in the evening washing the little pieces of pottery found that day. Of course, I had to do stupid things like using the handle of a big pot as a telephone.

This is the Kiato pebble beach:

First day of work, sorting pottery.

The most dangerous thing in Greece are the thorny plants. You have to walk into them because you aren't supposed to go off the line when surveying. So, for the sake of accurate archaeology, we had to. These evil mother***kers poke right through any kind of trousers. Pat (the geophysics guy from York, gets blood poisoning every year because he has to walk through more of these than anyone else)

The only good thing about being out in the field by 6am every morning was that we got to see the spectacular sunrises. Simply magnificient.

This is Michael. He is the King of Fashion, Guru of Good Taste.

The height of my career as a Japanese tourist/Papparazzi was when I made a wildy succesful video of Dan and Mike rubbing suncream on each other's naked backs.

When traveling in Pat's car between Kiato and Vasillico, the tiny 4-seater car usually transported 6 people, usually with me in the boot.

Yanni is a funny guy from Cyprus. He worships everything. One day, he made a mosquito from an olive and started worshipping it. He also liked to worship me when I sat on the window sill to read.

Sunset by the sea.

One day, a kitten hid under the wooden platform in the courtyard and mewed the whole night. The next morning, the Kitten Catchers were called in. Here're Pat and Gary who eventually managed to get the kitten into the box and release it somewhere near where we thought its mother was.

This is the windy road up from the village to the plateau. We went up this every morning in the back of a lorry.

We visited Corinth. On this mountain, you can see the Acropolis.

Ruins.

There is this place in the village, if you walk right to the end of the plateau, where you have a fantastic view of the plain and right to the sea.

Another sunrise.

My moment of fame. I found a Doric column that got the supervisors extremely excited because it confirmed the presence of a temple.

On the 5 of July, the sea was rough.

They were crazy about the Hookah pipe. Tobacco smoke filtered through the water at the bottom of the glass thing.

This was how we did our laundry.

This is the love triangle. Girl on my left is a Greek babe, girl on my right is Jess from York. I'm sorry, XY!

Me, pretending to be Jess

Dinner was like this every night.

Work was like that. This was the very last day. They made us work right to the end. I'm the one in blue.

When they had too much to drink and too much cheesy music on the airwaves, they danced with tools.

Seems like this is as many pictures as Blogger allows me to upload in one entry. So I guess this is all you're getting! Haha hope they were entertaining.

Hello everyone! I'm back in York from Greece. I have a suntan dammit. Some things just won't stop til they get you. I mean, I've spent goodness knows how many years of my life in Singapore, managing somehow to avoid being burnt by the tropical sunshine. Then, I go to Greece for a month and the inescapable Mediterranean sun gets me. Anyway, what I have is a farmer's tan (brown arms, legs, face and neck) because the sky would have to turn pink before I bow to peer-pressure and start tanning myself on the beach in a bikini. Opps! The sky did turn pink on several occassions around sunset time. But no, I did not run around in a bikini. Bleah.

I also went to my first nightclub. Wow! How many people can say that their first club was a Greek nightclub? (other than Greeks of course. You think I'm stupid?) It was peer pressure and not wanting to ruin people's mood that led to the sad situation of Audrey sitting miserably in Quasar-Bar and Club, coughing and suffocating from cigarette smoke. I was also nauseated by the bass of the music (emabarassingly, throbbing bass makes me feel like throwing up cos it messes with the inner ear). People all around were pressuring me to drink alcohol and dance. I didn't dance. And to be polite to a very insistant girl, I took a teeny weeny 3ml sip of some reddish-orange thing that tasted like fruit juice, only bitter. It was horrible and I had to borrow someone's coke (cola that you drink, not powder that you snort) to take away the taste. Eurgh! Someone finally took pity on me and I was driven back to the school which was home for a month at 2.30am.

I will post more stuff as I recollect the events and hopefully not be too lazy to post the pictures.

It's World Cup season again! And I'm going to Greece soon. By this time next week, I will be there :)

Life is busy and exciting and hot. I never expected it to be so hot in summer. I woke up one morning and thought I was back home because I was so sweaty. I'm walking around in berms and sandals, just like at home, and it feels good!

I have plans to go to Whitby again tomorrow. Wow! Term hasn't even ended and my holiday has already begun!

Prima Taste Rocks man! I thought only the Rendang was nice. But today, I just tried the Singapore Chicken Curry mix and it kicks ass :) Tastes just like what my last maid used to make on sundays. Eating it, I felt like I was sitting in my home sofa on a sunday afternoon.

Song Change! Dance like an idiot to this one :)
Post excavation finds processing is dull work. About 11 people from my group of 15 turned up today. We all agreed that we had 10 too many people. As a result, we had to find ways to amuse ourselves. Here are aracheology students hard at work:

The classic well-dressed skeleton. Seen here with Jimmy

That's my coat

I had antlers surgically attached during lunch break
I went caving on Saturday. It felt so nice to be down a cave again. I went with four guys, two of whom were gay. It was highly amusing in the car. I was squashed in the middle of the two straight guys in the back. Because the middle seat had a weird seat belt that had two contact points, one on either side, my arse would get felt up every time one of the guys have to remove their seat belts. So I was yelling at the gay fella whose car it was, " It's I hate your seat belts! My arse keeps getting felt up!"

On the way back, I was trying to attach my seat belt and one of the guys beside me made a funny noise. Someone asked me, " Audrey, are you feeling Chuck up?" And my immediate response was, " No, God no!" Roaring laughter ensued and Chuck's ego was crushed. But I told him that I respected his body. The guy driving remarked, " If you don't like Chuck, I'm afraid you don't have much other choice in this car." At which point, the other straight guy beside me said,"HEY!"

The cave itself was very nice. Wonderful formations that looked like curtains. Some cavers before us had used cave mud to make "BUSA '06" on the wall. I rearranged it into "Puss_ '06" and asked one of the guys to complete the rude word. Then, made a mini penis with one testicle and stuck it out from the wall and again asked someone to complete the anatomy.

Excavation is over. Thank God. Now, my cracked and bloody hands can recover and my abused ker-nees can heal themsleves. I'm back to wandering the city. On days when Summer deigns to give us some warmth and sunshine, every spare patch of grass is occupied by people. When I go wandering on such days, I avert my eyes all the time from the sight of couples sucking face.

I'm going caving tomorrow! It's been a long time since I last caved. Yeah baby...

XY just informed me that she is attached. To a guy, I think. I'm jealous cos she is my girl. But I suppose one girl and one guy is fair enough. At least it isn't another girl. I would have been even more jealous.

Alright, I'm straight. I just like to act crooked. Of course I'm happy for XY. I hope it will work out well. Best of luck to you, woman.

Hello all. It's been a while since I last posted. I've been busy with Archaeology field school. First with the on-site lessons where they taught us about geophysical survey, buildings stone-by-stone elevation recording and burial monuments recording., then with the field trips which were planned to give us a feel for the topography and geology of the Yorkshire area and now with excavation at the site of Burdale (muddy field in the middle of godforsakeness).

Let's start from 8 May...
In the little town of Malton,

There was the Talbot Hotel.

Behind the Talbot, there were steps that led down under the building.

The steps led down to an undercroft that had been discovered by an employee of the estate that manages the property. If you turn right at the bottom of the stairs, you enter and the undercroft which consists of two rooms. If you turn left, you will find yourself in an extremely unstable tunnel that leads down to the river. We were not allowed down the tunnel for safety reasons.

Instead, we were led into the damp, cold and dark undercroft where we slaved away making stone-by-stone elevation drawings of the walls.

During lunch break, we were allowed out to get some sun. Which was a good thing.

On 9 May, we went to one of the fields at Burdale to learn about landscape survey using cool equipment like this. This is a Theoldolite. It is used for measuring distance and depth with infrared or laser beams.

When using the infrared beam, you get someone to hold this prism thing over the point you want to record and bounce the beam off it to get the distance and depth.

They didn't allow us to use the laser beams because it would have been dangerous with all the other people walking about the field.
However, my group mate Dave H. managed to get one of the post-grad supervisors to show us how to turn on the laser beam. We were so tempted to laser one of the noisy wandering sheep.

And of course, I'm extremely proficient at relaxing during lunchtime although I sometimes look like a gay wanker.

We spotted a metal detectorist in the next field through the telescope. You can see him here, caught in the crosshairs.

11 May - Field Trip (Like a coach holiday around the Yorkshire area)

This is the nice path in Millington Nature Reserve. The slopes are mainly chalk which is not so good for archaeological preservation.

The lecturers were amusingly interrupted in the middle of their talk by a guy who put up a big yellow sign saying " CAUTION Tree Cutting IN PROGRESS" and proceeded to carry out the threat.

I had two ice lollies for lunch. This was the second one.

The famous Humber Bridge at its spectacular best. Hope you enjoy this, Jun.

This is the view from the bridge. The water is muddy because it is an estuary.

Two busloads of students walking in a field in the middle of nowhere.

We were then told that apparently it was a site of particular archaeological significance. But what with the lovely sunshine, the lecturer was talking to himself.

12 May - Field Trip. Malton and Howardian Hills

I fell asleep on the way there. Some guy took a photo and sent it to me.

At the entrance to the Malton museum, there was this. Anyone remembers our dear friend Edmund Burke who was seriously over-quoted in literature exams?

Intro to Castle Howard and Howardian Hills:

The Howards are a rich ass family. In the late 16th - early 17th century, their rich ass ancestors got hold of this land. They used their money to transform the whole landscape and built magnificent buildings to try to create a paradise landscape. Having lots of money meant they could do pretty much whatever they wanted. This included flooding some land to create a lake and moving an entire village out of the way. Some people refuse to visit the estate because they find such use of wealth and power abhorrent.

Here is an example of kinky architecture. The Victorians were very shy about sex but the Georgians weren't shy at all. Notice the obelisk? It's obviously a phallic symbol. The arch is like a giant vagina. When approach this castle from the south, the undulating road makes the obelisk appear to move in and out of the arch. *Jun, take note.

A view of the castle across a field. They used to have cattle and deer grazing. Notice how everything is calculated to give a sense of grandeur and to awe the visitor.

A little pyramid thing on the outskirts of the estate. Purpose? Because they can.

The Mausoleum.

The artificial lake and a peeking view of the castle.

The Temple of the Four Winds. Nothing really pagan here. They just thought Greek Pagan stuff was really cool.

And then it was off to excavation. I've been excavating for 8 days. Only 2 more days to go. After that, we will be processing finds at King's Manor (washing bones, recording finds etc).
